Lg Plasma TV Review

August 17th, 2010

Many consumers are looking to buy a Plasma TV with adequate features at a reasonable price. LG Plasma TVs fit this requirement. LG’s Plasma TV targets consumers who want affordability with a few good features, such as its pleasing modern design and excellent sound quality. The trade-off is reduced overall technical specification when compared to the more expensive models, but many home-users neither need nor want to use the more advanced technical features offered by competitor Plasma TVs.

Tested against other TVs in its size category, LG plasma HDTV achieved Superior rating for color quality on standard- and high-definition images, but only Average rating for brightness and contrast. In the TV programs viewed such as the George Lopez Show, the skin tones were believable, while some hint of pixels were present. Sports broadcasts like the San Francisco Giants game showed a good balance of orange and green colors. Picture detail was also good when viewing low-light scenes such as some action sequences in Lord of the Rings.

In terms of connectivity, some of the LG Plasma TV models feature three HDMI inputs compared to other brands, which have four. The User can utilize a USB port for data stored in card readers or thumb drives. This USB port allows the plasma television to display photos in a slide show, using the remote control to manage the settings.

With some adjustments at the back, the LG Plasma TVs swivel, although the action is not as smooth as Samsung FP-T5084 TV. Cables can be tied together using a loop that is installed at the back near the swivel bolt.

There are two ways to set the display: through the remote control or through the mini touch pad on the lower right side of the TV. The test found that the remote control keys were not backlit and they were somewhat cramped, which means the User might have to switch on a light to operate the remote at night. To adjust the display settings manually, the mini touch pad at the lower right side is used. This launches the menu for all the TV display settings. These include menus for color adjustments, with the colors red, green, and blue as indicators. The menu also allows the adjustment of contrast, brightness and vividness of the display through color presets called Dynamic, Standard and Mild. Dynamic is the most vivid preset but the color saturation gives unnatural images. With the Standard and Mild settings, images are toned down but more realistic.

LG Plasma TVs appear larger than competitors because panel extensions on both sides contain built-in speakers. These speakers were found to deliver good quality sound from tests ran during musical shows like Phantom of the Opera.

Finally, LG Plasma TVs come with a full 2-year warranty on parts and labor, which is double the standard warranty of most competitors.

Sony Bravia KDL – 46Z5800 Review

August 10th, 2010

Sony started out as a radio repair shop in Tokyo in 1945. The first company to develop rice cookers and heated cushions, their repertoire went on to include portable radios, televisions, tape recorders, and a portable music player or Walkman. This company is famous for creating its own standards for new technology instead of adopting the guidelines of other manufacturers. The Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5800 is the 2009 addition to the fine products made by the famous dynasty.

This 46″ high definition Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5800 LCD television offers superb detail and performance for watching many types of programming or playing games. The numerous features on this unit are proof of Sony’s high standard of design, quality, and performance.

Enjoy Internet and Satellite Programming

The DLNA Ethernet connection accesses videos, music, and photos from any connected device using a single remote. Instead of viewing programs on the small computer screen, the same images are reproduced on the larger screen television. The Bravia Engine 3 function along with Live Color Creation shows crisp, clear images with greater detail, optimal contrast, and vivid, deep color.

The Applicast feature is a series of network applications that can be easily accessed when Bravia is connected to the Internet using an RSS reader. The RSS Reader is a way to “subscribe” to favorite websites for up-to-the minute updates and breaking news from the Internet. The Freesat tuner included in the Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5800 receives free digital satellite programs and broadcasts without additional hardware. The MPEG-2 tuner receives both digital and analog signals. Televisions utilizing analog signals to receive programming will be obsolete when these transmitters are turned off in the transition to the new digital age.

Surround Sound and Energy Saving Features

HDMI outputs connect to high definition sources such as Blu-ray disc, play station 3, media players, camcorders, and video players. HDMI inputs are for personal computer signals. Dolby Digital Plus offers unsurpassed sound quality as well as S Front Surround Sound for complete digital audio from the two front speakers. Head and earphone jacks permit individual enjoyment of favorite programming. The high density 46″ screen provides undistorted and smooth fast-moving images from car chases and sporting events.

The Scene Select button on the remote adapts the picture and sound settings to the program being watched. This set also features energy saving devices. The echo settings include a variety of options to reduce the amount of power being used. Most sets use energy even when turned off, but the energy saving switch on the Sony Brava KDL46Z5800 decreases the power consumption to zero when on standby or turned off.

When no programming is being watched, the picture frame mode can display pictures or pre-installed images. Displaying favorite family pictures or other graphics while this unit is mounted on the wall or positioned on a tabletop stand would provide an excellent showcase.

The Sony Bravia KDL46Z5800 comes with a three year warranty and optional five year extended warranty. This greatly versatile, high definition television provides the performance that has made Sony the household name that they are today. No consumer should be without this modern technology that enriches the viewing of all programming.

Printable – Acer Aspire 5542g Review

July 28th, 2010

The Acer 5542G is the company’s replacement model for it’s very popular 5536/5536G series. The new model comes with an improved processor and a whole new Tigris platform. It was after more than a week’s wait and phone calls that I got hold of one Acer Aspire 5542G. From the moment I read the specification sheet, I have been very thrilled to get the machine in my hands. The specs boasts about a AMD Turion II 2.2 Ghz, 3GB DDR2 Memory, ATI 4570 Dedicated graphics card with a 512MB DDR3 memory and a quite generous 320GB Hard disk drive for a price tag of less than RS 34000, which is quite a tempting deal.

In this detailed review we will see how these specs meet the real performance needs.

Key features:

In this section, we will look in detail at the key components that makes up this laptop. I will also try to include as much specifications and details as available from the manufacturer’s source.

Processor:

Acer Aspire 5542G comes with the second generation AMD Turion Processor (AMD Turion II M500) clocked at 2.2Ghz which houses a 1MB L2 Cache. The Turion II M500 is fabricated using the 45nm technology. It belongs to the Caspian generation of processors and supports HyperTransport 3.0 and hardware virtualization.

The Turion is AMDs answer to mobile processors, which provides excellent performance while keeping the power consumption at the minimum. The Turion processors generates less heat compared to AMD’s desktop work horses that have a bad reputation in heat emission department. The Turion II being the next version of the decent performer Turion, it sets high expectations in terms of competing with the Core 2 Duos in the market. We will see how it scores in real performance when we benchmark it down the road.

Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512MB DDR3

One of the main attractions of this laptop is the graphics engine that lies beneath the hood. The Acer 5542G comes with a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 512 MB of DDR3 memory.

For those of you who are not clear about the difference between an integrated and a dedicated graphics solution, I’m adding a few words. An Integrated graphics solution (eg: the Intel’s X4500) doesn’t come with dedicated video memory; it eats up your system memory for graphics processing and thus the slower path between the system memory and the graphics engine causes the biggest bottle-neck when it comes to performance. Also the integrated graphics processor would be less powerful than a mainstream dedicated one in raw processing power. On the other hand, a dedicated graphics card will usually have a high speed dedicated video memory (eg: DDR3) which is coupled to the graphics processor. This removes the bottle neck and gives the card superior performance. The graphics processor on a dedicated card would usually support high-end effects provided by the latest DirectX and OpenGL APIs which gives the realism and visual-candy in the latest games.

The HD 4570 is a faster clocked version of the Mobility Radeon 4530/4330. It has a 64 Bit memory bus and comes with a 512MB DDR3 VRAM. The 512MB should be adequate for most gaming and graphics needs, unless you play in the craziest resolutions. (As rendering resolution increases, the more memory it needs). The DDR3 memory will meet the needs for the fastest and huge volume texture processing that modern games demand. However the 64 bit bus stands inferior to the 128 bit bus that most mainstream cards offer.

The ATI Mobility Radeon 4570 is based on the RV710 chip and it provides 80 stream processors. The Mobility Radeon also provides the video technology called Avivo HD that provides an on board 7.1 sound chip. The graphics solution also features a 2nd generation Unified Video Decoder that supports full bitstream decoding of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 streams. The 4570 graphics unit is capable of handling all video tasks including HD video decoding.

Display:

The Acer 5542G comes with a 15.6″ High Definition LED backlit TFT LCD display that provides 220-nit high brightness and Acer’s Cinecrystal display technology. The pure widescreen (16:9) display supports a maximum resolution of 1366X768 and provides a 60% color gamut. It has a high-def response time of 8ms.

Memory: There is nothing much to boast about a 3GB DDR2 800Mhz memory that comes with the Acer Aspire 5542G when compared to the current line of laptops many of which sports a 4GB under the hood. The 3GB is sufficient for most of the computing needs which can later be upgraded to 4GB. However the 3GB deal would appear reasonable when we keep the price tag of the Acer 5542G in mind.

Hard Disk Drive: Again there’s nothing jaw dropping in this department. But I would say that the 320GB that comes with the Acer 5542G is generous for most of your storage needs.

Processor performance and benchmark:

I was initially reluctant to switch from the Intel’s proven workhorse Core 2 Duo to the AMD’s Turion family of processors. It is a widely accepted fact that the Intel’s processor outperforms the AMD counter part, provided that both runs on the same clock speed; the main culprit being the lower L2 cache in AMDs. But my reluctance to move on to the AMD Turion II was swept away by the performance benchmarks. The AMD Turion II M500 2.2 Ghz outperforms the Intel Core 2 Duo 6670 2.2 Ghz. When AMD Turion II M500 scores a decent score of 1426, the Intel Core2 Duo 6670 managed to get only 1379, though the margin is not huge.

The Turion II M500 also scored higher in the Windows 7 performance rating with a score of 5.7 against the score of 5.5 of the Intel’s Core 2 Duo 6600.

The Turion II without doubt has improved it’s architecture dramatically compared to the previous generation Turion, which helps it to achieve a higher performance benchmark, while competing head-on with the Intel’s counterpart, even though AMD Turion II M500 houses only 1MB L2 cache compared to the 2MB offered by the Intel’s variants.

The AMD Turion II M500 is doubtlessly an excellent performer and is commendable for being the first AMD processor model overtaking the Intel Core 2 Duo along the performance lines, both of which are clocked at the same speed. Though the Turion II has only 1MB L2 Cache it brings excellent performance and computing power on a budget. The Turion II M500 processor gives the Acer 5542G with great number crunching efficiency, that was much noticeable when we ran tests involving compressing/extracting, Gaming and Video rendering using 3D graphics tools. The Acer 5542G showed brisk performance during daily computing, and the Windows responsiveness and multi-tasking were significantly quick.

Graphics card performance:

The Acer 5542G with the ATI Mobility Radeon 4570 with 512MB Dedicated DDR3 VRAM is not an exceptional performer in terms of the latest gaming standards. But very few laptops comes with a high end graphics card that meets the high-end gamer’s needs and those machines will burn a hole in your wallet for sure. The HD 4570 in the Acer 5542G is a decent graphics card to play a little older game titles in full detail whereas when it comes to the most recent games, you might have to tweak the detail level to a medium to get reasonable frame rates.

The Acer 5542G is an excellent choice for gamer’s on a budget as well as 3D Graphics designers and Animators.

I found the Acer 5542G delivering very smooth frame rates on Test Drive Unlimited even at the highest settings, though a video review of the Dell Studio 15 housing the same graphics card showed significantly lower frame rates in YouTube. May be the performance boost is due to the DDR3 Video Memory as well as the better number-crunching done by the AMD Turion II M500. The card fared really well in older titles like Need For Speed Most Wanted, Need For Speed UnderCover, Unreal Tournament 2003, and Crysis Warhead even at the highest detail settings with 1024X768 resolution and FSAA turned on. The Acer 5542G also delivered consistently playable frame rates in Microsoft Flight Simulator which is a quite resource hungry game, due to the presence of huge textures and extensive terrain.

Display performance:

The 220-nit high brightness display of the Acer 5542G, gives excellent display quality with good sharpness and contrast. It also delivers very good and accurate color reproduction (60% gamut). The viewability from sides is not exceptional, but is adequate. The only major disadvantage of the display is that it’s high glossy finish attracts glare. Hence it is not suitable while viewing against any direct light source.

Audio Performance:

The Acer 5542G sports a Dolby certified audio system. The Realtek chip provides 32bit audio decoding and provides SP-DIF and Dolby Digital output. It also supports Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Surround modes. It means you will be in audio bliss, if you connect the Acer 5542G to a nice home theatre or high-end headphones.

The built-in speakers of the Acer 5542G clearly lacks the bass and was a disappointment during our tests. The sound clearly lacks the thump element in it. It doesn’t mean that the speakers are worthless. The speakers give you very nice high and medium range frequencies quite well. The audio volume levels were loud enough and will be adequate if you are not in the middle of a very noisy environment.

Battery:

The Acer 5542G comes with a 6-cell battery pack. It would probably disappoint you, if you are looking for a laptop with 3+ hours battery backup. The lower battery backup can be attributed to the modestly big 15.6″ display paired with the dedicated graphics card that can drain out quite a lot of battery power. With the screen brightness at low, I was able to obtain a 2 hours 50 minutes backup with no audio, video or games turned on. At highest performance setting, you can expect roughly two hours of battery backup.

Heating:

Being an AMD based laptop most of us who have used an AMD based sytem would have concerns about over-heating. Stay cool. The Acer 5542G handles heat well. When you use it for extended hours for your daily computing needs, it doesn’t generate any significant heat. I found the heat near the palm rest regions less compared to some other Intel based competing laptop models. The Acer 5542G has adequate ventilation at the bottom and has a vent at the back, that blows the hot air out. The fan steps into high speed the instant things start getting hot.

It doesn’t mean that the Acer 5542G won’t generate heat at all. The moment you start playing games, the rosy picture changes. Though the Acer 5542G’s body remained just warm, the vent at the rear end was blowing out really hot air, which obviously means heavy heat generation, though it gets displaced well. Though the Acer 5542G gets away with the heat quite well, it would be a good choice to get an efficient laptop cooling pad if you are into serious gaming.

Other components:

The Acer 5542G comes with a good DVD Writer, Bluetooth, Wireless LAN etc. These devices performs quite well and doesn’t seem to have any specific points worth mentioning.

Accessories:

The laptop comes with a nice backpack from Targus with Acer logo on it. The backpack has adequate space to carry some extra stuff in it while you are on the move. It’s build quality is good and provides adequate cushioning for the laptop compartment.

Conclusion:

Acer 5542G is a laptop that brings great value to those on a budget, who need excellent processing and graphics performance. I highly recommend it for all gaming enthusiasts and graphics designers, owing to the excellent performance of the processor and the graphics solution built-in. It’s powerful processor can meet most of the extreme computing needs unless your needs target the ultra-high-end like an i7. The Acer 5542G equipped with it’s Turion II processor competes really well with the Core2 Duos out there; no need for the ‘Will AMD perform equally well?’ question anymore. It delivers brutal processing power.

If you are an audiophile who would play music through the laptop’s built-in speakers round the clock, Acer 5542G may not be the best suit for you. If that is not a top-priority for you or if you have a nice home theatre/headphone, then the Acer 5542G gives you great joy in the audio department too, through it’s Dolby processing and digital outputs. It all depends on your needs.

The battery suits the home computing / gaming / designing needs. It’s 2+ hours backup can handle your presentation, on-the-go needs too, though a 3+ hours backup would have been more recommendable.

The laptop model I purchased comes loaded with Linpus linux operating system (command prompt only) and eliminates the Windows dependency, which helps the Acer 5542G keep its price down. You might also get a version with Windows pre-loaded but for a higher price tag.

Pros:

Excellent processor

Excellent graphics for designers and budget gamers

Good Looks

Quite sturdy design

Good Audio processing and digital out

HDMI

Cons:

Built-in speakers do not match the good audio processing and lacks bass completely

Glossy screen difficult to work with in direct light

Volume control keys could have been softer to touch

Arrow keys needs refinement

Pricing and final words:

This laptop is available in India in many online shopping websites at a sub RS 35k price tag. I got hold of one for RS 33700/- (approximately 717 USD) through a local dealer. With such reasonable price tag and compelling set of features, I strongly recommend the Acer 5542G.

Sony PSP Go Review

July 3rd, 2010

Because of the success of the iPhone and the iPod Touch as gaming devices, Sony had to do something to stop losing market share so they brought out the new PSP Go for a more compact look and feel.

Along with the size reduction, Sony also added some compelling features. The PSP Go includes Bluetooth, slide-out controls, and a pocket-sized design. But the biggest change has been turning the gaming device into a digital device, no more cartridges to buy!

Some PSP Go features: the screen has excellent resolution, it is easy to grip with its two rounded rubber stoppers, has an analog stick for game playing, has more pronounce L and R buttons, and the Display, Sound and Volume buttons have all been moved to better locations.

The switches and sliders have been kept in the same basic areas of the previous PSP models. The hold/power toggle is still on the lower right side and the wireless switch is on the lower left side. It does include a new M2 Micro memory card slot that is situated directly above the power button.

With the addition of Bluetooth, you will be able to connect to a wireless headset and other devices that use Bluetooth 3.0 for connectivity.

The PSP Go also includes a microphone for applications which use voice, like Skype. You will find the built-in microphone between the analog stick and the start buttons. You also have the option of hooking up a wired mic or headset.

One thing you will not find on the Sony PSP Go is a touch screen. This drawback may affect how it competes against the iPod Touch and the DS/DSi which also allow for onscreen keyboards and web surfing.

Canon HF S10 Camcorder Review

June 21st, 2010

The Canon HF S10 camcorder belongs to the Vixia line of high definition (HD) camcorders and is the predecessor of the more advanced HF S11 camcorder. Like the HF S11, it has an 8.59 megapixel CMOS image sensor. However, it has only 32 GB of internal flash memory, unlike the HF S11, which has 64 GB of internal memory. Thus, it can store only 12 hours of video recordings at LP mode while the HF S11 can store up to 24.5 hours.

The Canon HF S10 camcorder weighs slightly more than one pound but it can still be considered to be lightweight in view of its 2.8 inch by 2.7 inch by 5.4 inch dimensions. It has a streamlined user interface and good functional design. It is also somewhat more comfortable to grasp and operate because of its slightly bigger size. The video light is located on the pop-up flash and the stereo microphone is found on either side of the lens barrel. The position for the microphone permits better separation and bigger microphones.

The photo button and the zoom switch are placed on top of the camcorder under the user’s forefinger and the mode dial is situated right behind the proper location of an eye-level viewfinder. Unfortunately, it does not have a viewfinder. Most of the controls for shooting are found on the LCD bezel and the function button offers the most frequently utilized settings, including the full menu system that is found one more level down.

When the Canon HF S10 is compared with the Panasonic HDC-TM300, the Panasonic model is a better model for the average user but it has a touch-screen interface. The optical zoom for the Panasonic model is slightly better at 12x compared to the HF S10’s 10x. The Panasonic model also has a better digital zoom at 700x compared to the Canon model’s 200x.

While the Canon HF S10 is an excellent HD camcorder for the average user, the lack of an eye-level viewfinder is a serious drawback. And the HF S100, which is very similar except that it lacks internal memory, may be a better buy because of its cheaper price.

Fanatic Digital® Imperial Series 6ft v1.3c 120hz+ HDMI Cable- Gold Plated, Double Insulated Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

I recently purchased tis item and I’m happy with the purchase. I’ll start by tellng you that I had already purchased a Rocket Fish 4′ HDMI cable at best buy (why did I do that???). I paid almost sixty dollars for the thing. Don’t get me wrong, the cable is well made, it has good quality all around. However, as some of you with a HDMI cable at home already, these cables are thick, heavy, and sturdy, in other words kind of a pain when not in-wall, because you want to set up your system nicely tuck in behind all your other junk near your TV (I’m pretty sure you don’t want anymore cables hanging around) Any way, that’s where this cable comes in. It is “BLACk”, I think I got a slam dunk with this one (I read other reviews complaining about the cable being blue). This thing is sweet. It is flexible and has a nice strong built to it. I tried it with my new blu-ray player and the pic quality is awesome. So, everyone out there, if you are looking for a HDMI and can use this lenght, this is the cable you want to have. I’m not trying to dis the Mediabridge cable people, but this probably is far superior when it comes to quality and flexibility.Plus, you cannot go wrong with a sub seven dollars product like this (comapred to the , , 0 cable)

How To Use Multiple Speakers On One Home Theater Or Stereo Amplifier

May 24th, 2010

This is ultimately easy, but before explaining the process I feel it is necessary to provide a warning. Multiple sets of speakers usually can not be hooked directly to a standard audio amplifier without some sort of impedance matching device. This is in reference to those persons whom might want to run speakers in several rooms at the same time (distributed audio). If several sets of speakers are run from one set of speaker terminals the amplifier will usually overheat and shut down, and may blow the output stage (see footnote 1). These remarks do not apply to PA style amplifiers with 25 or 70 volt outputs, which require special speakers with transformers.

The correct solution is to use either an impedance matching speaker selector with the protection enabled, or use impedance matching in wall volume controls. Notice the underline in the sentence above. This is because most speaker selectors are made with a dangerous feature: a button, right in front, to disable the protection. If the switch was in back to prevent accidental deactivation of the speaker protection it would be much better. If the protection is accidentally switched off while running multiple pairs of speakers the amplifier will shut down, may blow output fuses, and very well may damage the output stage of the amplifier. There are really only 2 reasons to turn this switch off, the most relevant being that impedance matching volume controls are being used on ALL pairs of speakers. The other reason would be if only one pair of speakers are being run, making impedance matching unnecessary. In this event, though, leaving the protection switched in will make only a very small difference to the sound, so why not leave it on?

Remember it this way: only put one speaker per pair of terminals (usually red and black) on the amplifier. Do not try to use a surround amp to feed several rooms with one room on the center, one room on the rear surrounds etc. This is due to the way a surround receiver distributes the sound as you may end up with only the voice in one room and only the music in another! The correct hookup for a surround receiver puts surround sound in the main room and sound from the left and right main speakers is distributed. My recommendation for hooking up a surround receiver is as follows. Run the speaker selector from the front left and front right outputs on the amplifier. Hook your front left & right speakers to the first speaker switch on the speaker selector. You will need to re-balance your surround system by running the pink noise test as the speaker selector will decrease the output to the left and right speakers by a small amount. This allows running the main speakers & the other speakers connected to the speaker selector without one set being louder than the others. If your speaker selector has volume controls, you need to make sure when you use your surround system for movies the volume control is at the same setting it was when doing the pink noise test. You may hook the speaker selector to the ‘b’ speaker switch on the amplifier if speaker volume balance between your main left & right speakers and the rest of the speakers is not an issue.

Another variation is amplifiers with a direct speaker output for zone 2, 3, etc. These are set up to drive 1 pair of speakers, and must be used with impedance matching if more pairs are to be used. The zone outputs allow a second (or third etc) source, for example CD in one room and radio in another.

An impedance matching speaker selector provides multiple outputs from one input, and protects your amplifier from damage. Speaker selectors come with 4-12 outputs. As long as your amp has enough power, you can push as many sets of speakers as you want. Simply connect the speaker selector to your ‘A’ (or ‘B’) outputs and the rest of your speakers on the speaker selector. You can purchase speaker selectors with volume controls for each individual speaker. Another option is in wall impedance matching volume controls, which require no speaker selector. Most of these are set with jumpers at install time, providing the correct matching. If you want to run more pairs of speakers than the speaker selectors or volume controls are made for (usually 12 pairs max. depending on the hardware) you probably want a second amplifier to run the second set of volume controls (or speaker selector) from.

So, what is impedance and impedance matching? (Warning: semi technical material ahead)

The music signal to your speakers is called alternating current (or AC), because it varies polarity and voltage. This is in comparison to a battery, for example which produces a steady, or direct current. You may picture current as the amount of water flowing in a pipe (the wire) and voltage as the water pressure. Alternating current can be imagined as a flow that reverses direction and direct current as a steady flow in one direction. The analogy is not exact but is close enough to get a picture of what is happening. Standard house current in the US reverses direction (polarity) at an interval (or frequency) of 60 times per second, measures as 60 Hz (Hertz). If you visit our site you can see this article with explanatory diagrams included.

Your speakers have a certain amount of resistance to current. Imagine the resistance as a constriction in the pipe, limiting the flow. They have a DC resistance, termed the voice coil resistance, and resistance to AC is called impedance. Resistance and impedance values are measured in Ohms. Impedance is a complex sum of dc resistances, plus the resistance to various AC frequencies caused by capacitance and inductance (normal properties of electrical and electronic devices). It is usually specified for speakers as nominal impedance, and is referenced to particular frequencies . However, Just think of it as resistance to AC for practical purposes. This is usually rated at either 8 or 4 Ohms. Most home amplifiers prefer an 8 ohm impedance. Each time another speaker is added in parallel the impedance is reduced. Visualize several pipes connected together to the same pump, obviously the flow from the pump increases (up to the limit of the pumps capability). The amplifier is the pump. Two 8 ohm speakers reduce the impedance to 4 ohms, four 8 ohm speakers reduce the impedance to 2 ohms, and so forth.

An amplifier expects (most require) a certain amount of resistance to current flow. The lower the impedance, the more current flows through the output stage of a typical amplifier. This usually flows directly through a transistor (or other amplifying device) and damages the transistor or protective resistors in the output stage. If you get lucky it only blows an output stage fuse. The moral of the story is always use an impedance matching speaker selector, (or volume control) and your amplifier will always see a safe impedance load.

1 (footnote)

Why does the amplifier output stage blow? This is due to the nature of a typical amplifier. It must first be clear that an amplifier does not actually make the input signal bigger. What it does is recreate a larger (higher current and voltage) copy of the original signal, and puts that out to the speakers. It makes this copy from the power supply voltage, which is derived from the AC from the wall outlet. This voltage must be first converted to DC. If not done efficiently the amplifier will hum (because it doesn’t know the words). The amplifier controls the power supply voltage by a sort of valve that controls the output voltage and current. These valves (transistors are usual, but may be integrated circuits, vacuum tubes, or other devices) are controlled by the input signal. In response to the input signal, the amplifying device allows more or less current (and/or voltage) flow through it to the output in an exact (hopefully) replica of the input signal. In order to have the majority of speakers work well with an amplifier, it needs a low output impedance (see the text above for a discussion of impedance). If the output impedance is too high, the frequency response will vary with the impedance of the speakers. This means that some sounds will be accented and some diminished from the levels they should be, and this effect will be different with every different set of speakers. In practical terms this means that, with the most commonly used circuit design, when the transistor (or other device) is fully on, it needs to pass almost all the power supply current available through it. This is the tricky part. The current flow is determined largely by the impedance of the speakers connected. Most amplifiers are designed to work with 8 ohm speakers, and may work into 4 ohms reasonably well. Some so called high current amplifiers may work well into 1 ohm. In other words, the amplifiers are designed that when the output transistors are passing the full current and voltage they can take, they are working into an expected value of impedance. When the impedance (ac resistance) of the connected speakers get too low, more current is allowed to pass through the amplifying device than it can take. It either burns up, or blows a fuse, or burns up emitter resistors, or some other form of damage occurs. Fusing often does not react fast enough to save the circuit. So why not design all systems to work into low impedances? Without going too far into it, this can result in huge cost increases. For example, for theoretically ideal performance into most of todays speaker systems, an amp should double it’s power for every halving of impedance. So for 100 watts into 8 ohms, it must put out 200 into 4 ohms, 400 into 2 ohms, and 800 into one ohm(Remember, this is theoretically ideal, and almost no amplifiers can accomplish an actual doubling of power for a halving of load impedance). Most decent amplifiers today have significantly less than .5 ohms output impedance, so as to perform well with speakers that may drop to low impedances at some frequencies. Our theoretical amp, if made to operate into a .5 ohm load would need to have the capability to put out 1600 watts per channel without damaging anything (in the amplifier!). As you can imagine the cost of a good quality amplifier with this kind of capability is substantial. Now think about this: The average user of this massive amp, with 8 ohm speakers, will only see an average output wattage of 100 watts RMS (RMS stands for Root Mean Square, and is basically an average power measurement which is approximately 70 percent of peak power). For most users this would price the amp out of reach. Some amps are built to this type of standard, for the reason that there are speakers that drop as low as one ohm that sound much better if driven by a very high current amplifier. One such example is the Krell Evolution One, which is a monoblock. This means you need two for stereo. They will only set you back about $25,000 dollars each. For those who might think I am making this up, use google to find prices on Krell monoblocks.

Review – Acer Aspire 6920-6422 Laptop

May 19th, 2010

Pros: Cosmetic Design and build quality, Fast Processor, Lots of Ram, Blu-Ray, Fast Dedicated Video Card, HDMI Output, Bluetooth, Wireless N

Cons: Speakers are weak compared to the rest of the system, but not bad, Could use a bigger hard drive.

Summary: Hands down, this is the best value in a no compromise full power multi-media laptop. This should replace your old desktop pc, or be your first pc if you don’t own one yet.

What can I say about the Acer Aspire 6920-6422? Intel dual core 2.5mhz processor – check, 4gb of ram – check, dedicated nVidia 9500 video card with HDMI – check, Blue-Ray player – check, Bluetooth – check, Wireless N – check. All this packaged in a beautiful shell that you can’t take your eyes off of.

This laptop is designed to do everything a PC is supposed to do. The core elements of this laptop should give you years of use for any office application, graphic intensive multimedia applications, with HD movies and gaming in all it’s glory. The combination of the dual core 2.5ghz processor, 4gb of ddr2 ram, and super fast nVidia 9500 video card is the perfect combination for the current Windows Vista operating system. It’s the only laptop in this price range that puts all these things together in a beautiful and well made shell.

Without getting too technical with speed charts, features, and benchmarks, it’s suffice to say that the Intel processor in the Acer Aspire 6920-6422 if one of the best available today. Faster than any other CPU in almost any laptop in any price range. It’s going to breeze through Microsoft Office applications like Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Plenty of power to handle rendering and processing in any graphic application such as found in Adobe CSx suites. It will even power through any processor intensive strategy games giving you fast response times. Trust me, the processor will not be the weak link in your laptop adventures.

The next link in the chain is the memory. With 4gb of DDR2 ram, Windows Vista will have plenty of room to open multiple office applications, surf the web, and check email all at the same time. You’ll be able to switch between any of these applications with speed and confidence. For graphic intensive applications, you’ll be able to work with large photo files, edit HD video content (like from your camera or camcorder), and seamlessly cut, paste, and undo any kind of multimedia content the typical consumer would ever work with.

The final link in the chain is the video card. The Acer Aspire 6920-6422 comes with the nVidia GeForce 9500M GS. This is the laptop version from it’s powerful line of desktop video cards. Most laptops use an integrated intel solution that works fine for office applications and watching movies. However, for graphic intensive applications like from Adobe, and gaming, you really need a powerful dedicated video card. The 9500 GS in this Acer does not disappoint. Again, without getting too technical, you’ll be able to watch HD movies using nVidia’s highly rated PureVideo HD, and play most games at or near their max quality settings. The other nice thing about the video setup on this laptop is that it comes with an HDMI out port. This will let you hook up your laptop to your 60″ HDTV and watch Blu-Ray movies in all their digital high definition glory.

Now lets talk about all the other specs that make up why this is such a great value. I don’t put as much emphasis on the hard drive size as I used too. Until solid state drives become the de facto standard, there is very little difference in the laptop community. The hard drive is your standard SATA 250gb 5400rpm 2.5″ drive. Nothing particularly special here. But at 250gb, it’s large enough not to leave you wanting for any office application and gaming. For you multimedia users who edit large graphic files like raw photos and HD video, you probably already have an external drive for that stuff anyway. If you don’t have one, get one. We all know how hard drives can and will fail eventually, so back up your pictures, movies, and projects to an external hard drive right away. Don’t leave stuff like that on a laptop that can be dropped, lost, or stolen, right?

Now there are a ton of other features here that I’m going to skim through a bit, but these are the key features that will save you money because they are not normally found on other laptops in this price range. In particular, the built in Blu-Ray drive. You’d pay $200-$400 for one of these separately. Bluetooth built in – you’d pay $20-$40 for this separately. HDMI out – built in and cannot be added separately, so this is really really nice. Digital sound with s/pdif out – you’d pay $60-$100 separately. Then there are the features you find on most laptops in this range such as memory card support, modem for dial up, ethernet, and USB ports. There’s also the 16-inch 16:9 ratio display, built-in subwoofer, and touch-sensitive multimedia control panel. Don’t let the subwoofer feature fool you. This is still a laptop speaker configuration that sounds better than most laptops, but is still a group of speakers in a thin plastic case. Don’t expect to be able to hear this thing clearly in a noisy room, but it does sound great while typing away in your favorite chair.

I really like the blu-ray drive, bluetooth, and hdmi port. You can watch blu-ray movies on your HDTV and chat using your cell phone’s bluetooth wireless headset on all the voice messaging services or VOIp like skype. These are the kind of features usually reserved for desktop users who would buy these things as add ons to their pc (like me). If you really wannabe be cool, buy a bluetooth keyboard and air mouse and use your hdtv as your main monitor. Turn your laptop into a true piece of home theater equipment since it already has the blu-ray drive, hdmi, and s/pdif audio.

The wireless-n is a nice feature. It’s main advantage right now is range. Although it’s theoretically 6x faster than wireless-g, it will be a long time before the cable/dsl companies will be able to pump out that kind of speed to the consumer. The theoretical 4x the range of wireless-g is where it’s at. If you have a wireless-n router at home, then you’ll be able to roam around your home without dropping the signal. Also, even though you won’t see any difference in internet speeds, wireless-n offers enough speed to stream HD video content smoothly and transfer files between your laptop and desktop much faster as well.

Still, with all these features and power found in the Acer Aspire 6920-6422, I thought of a couple of things that would make this little gem standout just a tad more. For one, a SATA port for external hard drives. Of course you can buy USB external hard drives that offer virtually the same speed, but I prefer using the native SATA interface whenever possible. Most USB drives are really SATA drives with a conversion to USB built in. The only other thing I’d want is the latest dual-band wireless n. It already has wireless n built in, but they have recently come out with a dual band wireless n that can operate on a different frequency. This reduces interference commonly found in homes and offices that have all kinds of wireless devices.

If you’re on the fence about deciding between a laptop and a desktop, get this laptop. In the long run, you’ll appreciate the portability, space savings, and power savings of this laptop without compromising processing power and features. Plus, you won’t need to buy a separate monitor ever, since you probably already have an HDTV which can be used as a monitor.

As of this writing, the best price can be found online for $1,395.99 w/Free Shipping!

TRENDnet TEW-633GR Wireless Router Review

May 14th, 2010

I had to part with my old Linksys router. A well deserved rest for all the rigorous hours rendered and labored. I must say it is not the best router, but it served its purpose well. So after canvassing and researching, I’m left with D-Link, Belkin and Trendnet. These brands boast of their own special features and advantages. Price is not really a major issue. I just want to buy something that will be a good investment and that will last for at least a year.

Trendnet is not a popular brand so I was really doubtful if it will be worth it. I was really attracted by its sleek look. Shiny black appearance that will naturally blend with any of your house appliance or room motif. I read enough reviews that will help me avoid any installation problems. I made sure that I am well informed of the router’s known or popular issues. I just typed 192.168.10.1 in my browser’s address bar. That’s where I also accessed the configuration. If you are the obsessive compulsive type, you will find yourself constantly wiping the fingerprints you left on this router. It is similar to the jet black DS Lite. Now, it’s very noticeable that the lights are not as bright as the other routers. It has the right brightness or glare. Green light means it’s not a gigabyte connection. If it’s orange it’s in gigabyte connection.

This router is phenomenal especially when you are into intensive streaming of high definition video and gaming applications. Its advanced features are commendable such as the quality of service that automatically detects and prioritizes different types of network traffic. I also like the hardware switch for the easy turning On and Off of the wireless feature. The button on the outside helps in the quick and hassle free security setup through the wireless

protected setup.

Compared to my old loyal router, Trendnet has given me a wider range. It has given me solid transfer rates in every room in my house- a two storey house with four rooms. This router has everything mounted to a single board. It can also be used vertically without losing good reception. This also minimizes overheating that can damage the product. For its price, there’s nothing I want more than a detachable antenna and a USB port. So far, so good. Recommended.
