Video Switch – Switch Between Multiple Video Inputs and Display Them Various Output Devices

A Video Switch allows a user to feed video inputs into the unit and output to a separate display. It is available in many sizes including 2, 4, 8 and 16 inputs to a single output and can be cascaded or daisy-chained to increase the potential number of inputs. Switching between them is also possible by using either the front panel push buttons or via infra red remote control. The switching is totally passive as no external power or batteries are required. Installation is simple as it is hot pluggable. This device maintains excellent video quality providing crisp, clear images at high resolutions up to 1600×1200 and 480p, 720p, 1080p. The pixel frequency is 250 MHz.

Available in many types, the most commonly used is the VGA Switch. Also known as a monitor switch, this device is compatible with the VGA connector type such as the ones found on a computers’ graphics adapter. Supporting the DDC1, DDC2, DDC2B, DDC2B+, DDC2AB, this device is compatible with multisync SVGA, VGA, & XGA monitors and is also compatible with PCs, MACs and SUNs with VGA video. They are equipped with a feature which allows auto skip over power off, a computer in suspended mode or an unplugged VGA cable. This product also has the desired regulatory approvals from FCC, CE and RoHS.

The new category has the ability to simultaneously connect several DVI (digital video interface) video sources and switch between them on a single DVI video display. This type of switch is called the DVI Switch. This device is also available with an audio option. Since it combines DVI interface with audio, a user no longer needs to have separate setups for display and audio. It can output sound and video signals from 4 DVI or analog video sources on a single DVI display and set of multimedia speakers. These switches have LED display for easy status monitoring and have a built in Amplification circuitry to make sure that signal doesn’t degrade even when extended to long distances. They support Windows and Mac host systems.

These switchers are an ideal accessory for home theaters, multi media and digital signage applications. With the help of the Video Switch, a user can present information from many computers to a single device simultaneously.

This is a very good product. The Amazon description is poorly written, not telling clearly what the product does. Let this review serve as an alternate description.

What I wanted was a switcher-splitter that would allow me to imput my blue-ray player, satellite box and up to two other imputs, and route whatever I put in either to either my 1080p 47-inch monitor or my older 720p 28 inch. I like crisp images, hate blurs and accordingly get distracted abd annoyed by watching low-def content on my big monitor.

I also like to keep a tv-program, like a sport event, on, either muted or with low volume, while watching a movie, so that when something exciting begins to happen on the tv probram I can pause the movie and volume-up the tv program. This product does just what I wanted it to, which the Amazon description does not make clear. Any of the four HDMI inputs, labled 1,2,3 and 4, can be routed to either of the two HDMI outputs, labeled A and B, and the two outputs can simultaneously sport different inputs you select, just as I wanted.

There is also an optical cable audio output so that you can route the audio of whichever of the four inputs you select for HDMI output A to a home-theater amp. The sound still goes out output A. This is great.

There is one negative to this product. It is that the manual is in some language written in characters. I think it is Chinese. But you have to be pretty dumb not to be able to figure out how to work this product without a manual.

I actually wanted a one-in, multi-out switch instead of the multi-in, one-out switch because I have a Blu-ray player and wanted to feed either the LCD monitor, or the projector. Since these are purely mechanical switches, they don’t care about signal direction. It appears to work in reverse direction as expected.

Just in case the devices don’t like signal glitches while powered, I will avoid switching the connection while the devices are on, though. Basically, I’ll know which display I want to use before turning anything on, so I’ll select the connection number on the switch, and then turn the devices on.

Unless the HDMI connector standard changes or something, these can’t get outdated, so that’s another plus. Depending on the switch quality, it may limit bandwidth, though, so it may not properly pass really high bandwidth signal, say, 4000×2500 or something, but I wouldn’t know what the limit is. The only other possible problem is that the switch contacts may eventually wear out and cause intermittent glitches or limit bandwidth enough to prevent even standard bandwidth signal (e.g. 1920×1080@60) from working properly.

For now, it seems to work fine, so I’m happy with it.
